Buoyed by the reliable and expanding U.S. hardwood resource, a massive hardwood processing capacity has been built in the U.S. to supply the growing domestic and export demand for hardwood products. Today, the U.S. is the largest producer of sawn hardwood in the world, producing nearly one-quarter of the world's lumber. Sawmills, dry kilns, molding and dimension plants, veneer slicing and plywood factories, flooring plants and concentration yards for distribution of hardwood material, exist in the U.S.

American hardwood lumber
All sawn lumber in the U.S. is inspected and graded to the rules of the AHEC Association member National Hardwood Lumber Association (NHLA), details of which are published in their Rule Book and summarized together with visual examples in the AHEC publication "An Illustrated Guide to Hardwood Lumber Grades."
